K-9 Patrol Teams

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office K-9 program started in 1992 with one team.  The program presently has four teams consisting of one handler and one dog each.  Three of the teams are dual purpose dogs for patrol work and drug detection.  K9 Bailey is a single purpose drug detection K9.   Specialized breeder/trainers import the K-9 dogs and both handlers and dogs complete extensive training prior to certification.  These teams take enforcement action, conduct evidence collection, provide security, provide public education, and assist with crime prevention. 

Patrol Training

In patrol, they have received training in:

  • Building searches
  • Evidence/article location
  • Handler protection
  • Suspect apprehension
  • Tracking

Drug Detection Training

In drug detection, they have received training on locating five specific narcotic odors. Specialized breeder / trainers import the K-9 dogs and both handlers and dogs complete extensive training prior to certification. These teams:

  • Assist with crime prevention
  • Conduct evidence collection
  • Provide public education
  • Provide security
  • Take enforcement action
